Today we’d like to introduce you to Quentin Guillory.
Quentin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My grandfather bought a set of hair clippers when I was 12 years old, he said, “Put the smallest guard on and cut my hair against the grain”. From that moment I fell in love with cutting hair. It gave me a strong sense of accomplishment. So, a lady who lived across the street from my grandparents asked me to come over and cut for grandboys (she laid me $3 per cut). Whole watch the guys at the shop where I got my hair cut I wanted to be as good as them. I practiced a lot on anyone who would let me. But the time I reached high school, I found I had a talent for writing names and football numbers in hair, this was while cutting in my uncle’s garage in Channelview, TX. I joined the navy and always had clippers and I continued cutting.
So, While serving active duty in the US Navy, I attended Howard’s Barber College in Charleston, SC. The owner Howard Boyd mentored me and taught me a lot about the skill side and business side of barbering. I continued to be a working barber from my release from active duty In Oct. 2004 until I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in Nov 2013. Due to the severe relapse I had, I stopped working as a barber for a few years. After I recovered, being at a barbershop motivated me to eat right, workout and get myself stronger so I could continue what I loved.
When I went back into the barbershop, I decided I wanted more from the industry. I decided to attend Franklin Barber College in Houston at the Northwest Campus, where I received training and my licenses as a Master Barber educator and cosmologist license. 19 years as a licensed professional and I’m still working and striving to do more and be more In this industry. 2018 I was a platform educator at the Texas International hair show in Mesquite, Texas. I continue to work and teach and started my own online barber course “Impact Pro Barbers” and I hope a podcast called “Barber Shop Connection”. Which serves as a platform to educate other barbers in this industry.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was good and bad. Good as in, I have always seemed to be around people who motivated, inspired and taught me how to be a better me in this industry. The bad has been health issues say to Day from a back injury I sustained I. The military to multiple sclerosis I deal with on a daily bases. Yet overall it has been a true blessing, to do what I love and make a living with something g I am passionate about HAIR!
