Meet Rohan Nair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rohan Nair.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Rohan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Since my childhood I loved wearing trendy clothes and knowing my name in the society to be as fashionable as I can. I moved to USA from India eight years ago without having a single thought of becoming a model. One day I am sitting in my class and a photographer Rafael Trinh approaches me to model for him. As I saw the pictures, I was obsessed with it any I started getting a feeling of wanting to do more. I got connected with the artists around the town and understand how this business works. Around 1.5 years ago I started modeling and have been consistent since then.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Roads are never smooth is it? I started posting my pictures in Facebook groups so people started knowing me more. Soon I got a call from two girls who acted racist and said that I am Indian and I can’t go beyond them. That made me think much one person can actually go beyond hatred. So, I started reading articles of other models and photographers what criticism they have been through and how they have overcome from those situations. I just wanted some motivation so I kept watching videos and reading articles. I have had more incidents happened with me where people acted racist in this industry.

Other thing is that I am a male model. Regardless of well-known name lot of creatives not interested in working with male models. They mostly go for female models. A photographer has even told me you are a male model so why I don’t really care about taking your pictures. The worst thing is some creatives always say about being supportive and stuff but those type of creatives are actually only supportive to the people whom they benefit from, certain race, and body type.

Anyways, this thing may make disputes and things harder but I am not the only dealing one who deals with this. I have learnt to overcome it hate to have grudges against someone. So, this type of things is not a big deal for me anymore. The best thing I have learn is to create stuff what I like not what people want to see.

Please tell us about your work.
On social media some people do think my career is modeling. Fact is modeling is not my career I work at Amazon and want to see where it takes my career. I do have lot of passion in modeling and I do freelance. Not associated with any agency. Even though this is not my major career I take things seriously every time I do a shoot. I want to be known for versatile model. I am proud of how people are loving my work and I like it when they reach out to me to work with them. Every time someone ask to work with them it’s a motivation. Proud of how my work have evolved.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Consistency and keep delivering things that I Like and not what my followers like.
