Meet Sandra “SanD” Romair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra “SanD” Romair.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started out about 15 years ago, as a mom-tographer; capturing memories of my child turned into me wanting to capture all the memories I could. I decided about 3 years in that I wanted to take my hobby to the next level. I decided to hone my skill and learn more about photography and my camera.

I enrolled in the New York Institute of Photography (NYIP) and after learning the fundamentals of photography and my camera, I enrolled in NYIP’s Photojournalism Course. I consider myself a portrait photographer so photojournalism was allowing me to step out of my comfort zone. Fast forward to today; I am a freelance photographer, capturing heirloom memories and special moments for all of my clients.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a bumpy road, especially with COVID. Business dipped during that trying time, however, I did my best to keep in touch with my clients, and offered social distancing while shooting 6ft apart. Today I am blessed to still have my wonderful clients and to still be doing what I love.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve always been a creative person and enjoyed all creative outlets.

I enjoy writing, painting, and of course photography. It’s even more fun when you can mix your media and create something you can stand back and be proud of. I’m always learning and looking for ways to be a better version of the artist I was yesterday.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Where do I start:

APPS: FLICKR – I’m old school.
BOOKS: KAI WONG’S Old School Photography: 100 Things You Must Know to Take Fantastic Film Photos.
PODCASTS: Fro Knows Photos Photography Podcast.

All around I enjoy learning and hearing about everyone’s experience with photography, so I try to stay tuned in.
