So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a newborn and family photographer based in NW Houston, TX. I first began my photography journey 7 years ago when my first child, Emma, was born. I quickly realized how fast children grow and change; I felt compelled to learn the art of photography so I could document my own little one. However, this hobby developed into a thriving business. As a mother, I recognize how family connections are a link to everything good and beautiful; motherhood is meant to be documented.
I also combine the best of both worlds: my all white, organic studio is the perfect place to photograph newborns and then I take outdoor family sessions during sunrise or sunset for optimal lighting.
Part of what makes my sessions unique is each session is custom designed by embracing the spirit of the little ones and also the interpersonal dynamic of each family. The sessions are about interacting together, connecting, and are lifestyle in nature, meaning they’re more candid and laid back to ensure the true personality and spirit of the family is showcased.
Then, in studio, I use a variety of gorgeous wrapping to set my newborn portraiture apart.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been fairly smooth, but also there have been challenges such as figuring out what I would like to specialize in and also how to market to the correct client. An example of a struggle is wanting to ensure you’re being true to your own work by taking the sessions making you most happy. Sometimes it’s hard to say no to a client, too, but at the end of the day, clients deserve someone who is enamored with the type of portraiture they’re doing. I specifically take only posed newborns portraits and family photos because this is what makes my heart sing. Another struggle I encountered was learning to not compare myself to other artists in the area. We’re all on our own journey and comparison is the thief of joy.

My name is Sarah and my portraiture business is called Sarah Borchgrevink Photography. I specialize in posed newborn photography, specifically wrapping and unique styling of bold, vibrant colors. I am known for outdoor, golden hour photos, too, of families.
My newborn sessions are unique because I am consistently trying new color combinations and use colors that are normally not associated with a specific gender. For instance, I typically will use a deep navy blue or burgundy with a girl baby. I also use a variety of textures in the images and lots of layers; this adds interest to the photos. My props are also specifically vintage and antique.
For my outdoor photos, I am known for shooting only at sunrise and sunset, which is when the light is best. I also have a succinct focus on familial interactions and ensuring everyone is having a fun time during the session. Mothers want to remember the joy; it is an honor to capture this time for parents!
I am most proud of my customer service skills. I pride myself on in person consultations and studio tours, returning phone calls and e-mails in a very timely manner, working well with children and showing patience, and also making sure I keep clear communication throughout the entire process.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My future plans for my business are to perhaps hire a second photographer to take my over flow.
