Meet Sheila Garcia of Life As She Does It

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Garcia.

Sheila, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Three years ago, I awoke from a dream that I believe was telling me to leave Corporate America and start my own business. In considering what that would look like, I knew the business should be something I’m good at. So I took motivational speaking/training & development, writing, cooking, and singing and created Life As She Does It.

The following day after the dream, Life As She Does It snowballed! So how to put all these things together and not sound like I’m all over the place at networking events or when advertising and marketing? I call it a “creative event services” business to help with any and all of your event needs!

I know it takes a cocktail of faith, grit, hard work, and trust to be a successful entrepreneur, and I put that in every single day. Every. Single. Day. Three years later, I am seeing the fruits of my labor and look forward to the future!

Has it been a smooth road?
At the risk of sounding cliché, nothing good comes easy. There have definitely been struggles. I am an author, and my blogs and books are all the same: They are about finding joy in the dark times or struggles that life can bring us.

In my book, A Life of Flavor, I talk about those struggles in my own life, and at the end of each chapter, there is a matching recipe for comfort! As far as Life As She Does It, being a business owner is not easy. But I believe that struggles grow us; that they prepare us for what comes next if we let them.

I am a person of faith as well, and though I don’t like obstacles, of course, I try to see the bigger picture and when they arise. I ask myself, “What can I learn from this?” Or I ask, “How can I respond to this situation in such a way that helps motivate myself and others?” It’s not easy to do. But I do try very hard to do it each time!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Life As She Does It – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I think Life As She Does It in and of itself sets me apart from others! Being taken seriously as a company that does all of the things I do is no easy task, and that may very well be what I’m most proud of. As far as motivational speaking/training & development, I love, love, love speaking at Women’s events, especially women-of-faith events.

But I also emcee events both big and small, and give Town Hall and other motivational talks corporately as well. Training and development comes in there, too, because I go to companies and facilitate leadership classes. Most recently, I’ve really had an opportunity to take two of the pieces of the Life As She Does It quadrant (training and cooking) and turn them into lunch and learns. I do the lunch, AND the learn!

The writing portion is quite cathartic for me. I have several blogs on my website, LifeAsSheDoesIt.com. I also have several eBooks that can be downloaded there. As I mentioned earlier, I have a published book, A Life Of Flavor, and am hopeful that the next one comes in late 2019. But I also do things like White Papers for companies or ghostwriting for others in order to help them tell their story.

To tell the truth, the Book Tour was one of the funnest parts of being a writer! Singing is also a very fun piece of Life As She Does It. I am in a five-piece band called The Texas Toast, and a duo/sometimes trio called She’s The One Dash Two, and as an individual do everything from wedding singing to the National Anthem at sports events. It helps people with their events both personally and professionally, but it also helps me, as it can be a fantastic outlet to let off stress!

Cooking is, for me, the hardest part of what I do. I am a boutique caterer, so I get to pick and plan the menus, but I also do meals tailored for families and individuals. I am the creator of the Inside-Out Detox & Cleanse (endearingly referred to as SHEsTox) and also cook for those clients of mine in order to make it easier on them. Most recently, I was chosen to be the official caterer for the team and staff of The SKEETERS, our minor league baseball team here in Houston!

Someone once told me, “You never have to work a day in your life if you do what you love.” Though I work hard every day to make Life As She Does It successful, it doesn’t feel so bad because I’m having a BALL!!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Oh, man! Houston is SO DIVERSE! I am originally from New York but have lived here more than half my life, and I have to say this is HOME. Though I love going back to see friends and family in NY, I always know I’m home when my plane lands back here.

The Hubster and I love to travel, but I know that this is where we belong. I love the diversity in our city because it lends itself to a cultural bridge over what is typically a gap in most places. If I absolutely have to pick something I don’t like, then perhaps it is the shirt-soaking heat during our summer months, but only because it’s hard to be a gal that wears glitter lips and false eyelashes with our humidity!

I’m a Queens, NY-born girl. But let me be clear – I LOVE HOUSTON, TEXAS!
