Today we’d like to introduce you to Martell Lacey.
Martell, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I sang in church a lot growing up and listening to my mom sing, which was intimidating. But what started it all. I was in the 11th grade in drama class. And we had apollo night to show other talents besides just acting. No one knew I could sing at the moment. We sign up with our names and song. I’ve always been handsome but I was fat. I had that complex and was painfully shy. One of the other popular guys sung the same song I signed up for. It seemed like everyone loved him and he could sing for sure. So I allowed myself to be intimidated because I didn’t know any better at the time. However, I pushed through that fear. I closed my eyes and started singing. I heard some screams and handclaps off and on. When I was done, I opened my eyes to a standing ovation. I saw the smiles and happiness. And wanted to continue.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it hasn’t been smooth. A lot of starts and stops. Not on my part with the company I was around. My struggles was other people’s opinions of me I didn’t agree with. Trying to turn me into something I didn’t recognize and wasn’t comfortable with. It doesn’t make those people bad. I just wasn’t in good company. However, I learned from being with those people. I’m more of a let’s create something new and amazing type of person. A lot of people see something working for someone else and they follow. I desire to be my best self, not somebody else.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Songs Unlimited is an entertainment, production and management company. I’m a singer, actor, and performer. I’m most proud of the success we’ve been experiencing even through this pandemic. Being my best self sets me apart from others. I have to feel what I’m singing, that’s a must! Not to just fit in a trend that already exists.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t do anything different. We all have different journey’s, this one is mine. I’m choosing to enjoy, learn, and grow… I’ve met some incredible people and I’ve accomplished a lot so far. And want to continue on this trajectory and enjoy the ride!
