Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Coleman.
Hi Sophia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in New York, the youngest of 4 children. My mother used to bake us cakes all the time, I guess she learned from my grandfather, who was a cook in World War II. When I was 6 years old, my brothers and I were placed in Foster Care. That time in my life was rough, horrible even. I bounced around between 7 or 8 homes, 1 in which was extremely abusive. My mother fought the system and was able to get us back after 3 years. We moved around a lot, my father was an alcoholic and my mom was effectively a single parent. She truly sacrificed so much to keep us all together. No matter her struggle, or our hardships, she always had the most love to give us, which came across in her cooking. I loved being in the kitchen while my mom baked, especially after we were reunited. After graduating High School, I joined the military, and made the ultimate decision to make choices that would change my life for the better. I got hurt while in the service, and I was medically discharged from the Army and became a disable Veteran. A few years later, I became a mom and I began baking custom cakes for my baby girl. My custom cakes were not, the prettiest initially, then they got better over time. I have moved away from making custom cakes and settled into baking cinnamon rolls, and 5 flavor pound cakes. During the Holidays, I bake and sell sweet potato pies, pecan pies, pound cake, and cinnamon rolls by the dozen, I absolutely love baking, I show my love for people by cooking and baking for them. Now married for almost 10 years, to a God-fearing man, and with 2 more children, I find myself constantly cooking and baking with love.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not a smooth road at all. Foster Care for 3 years, mom and dad divorced when I was 10. She married someone else, he tried to kill me when I was 13. Dr’s said if he hit me a 1/4 (quarter) inch higher, I would be dead. He went to prison for 10 years, I think. Injured while in the military, and was harassed because of my injuries. Was homeless for some time, with my husband and 2 children. Life has truly thrown me some serious curveballs.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m not sure how to answer this question/section. I am an Administrative Assistant with Cy-Fair School district. I am in the process of getting an LLC for my small banking business. I’m most proud of being married to my husband Dadrian, and having 3 beautiful, loving, kind children named Julina, Robin, and Dadrian Jr. Also, my husband and I purchasing our own home in 2023, stability finally after years of instability. It’s been a struggle since purchasing our home, but I’m grateful to God that we are still in the house.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see my business growing, not into a large corporation, but enough to leave a legacy for our children. I’d like to be known locally for my delicious baked goods, I would love to be in some farmers markets around the area.
