Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Summers.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a Brooklyn-born girl who has always had a vivid imagination. I started off as an elementary school teacher, wrote two books and raised three daughters, moved to California, then Europe and have been living in Houston for the past several years. Once my daughters went off to college, I was able to focus my interests on educating children in a different way, this time through film.
My first documentary was Unbreakable Threads (www.unbreakablethreads.com). As I have always loved children, I wanted to help them feel comfortable in school and always be proud of their families. I was fortunate enough to interview Mayor Annise Parker who was featured in the film.
After that, I wanted to film a different genre and produced and directed a quirky comedy, Krazy Meets Karma (www.krazymeetskarma.com), that will be out this year. Some crazy (with a k) mishaps ensued during filming, but at the same time, my love for filmmaking became solidified.
Following that whirlwind, I produced and directed a documentary short, Dear Cancer, Love Stacy (www.dearcancerlovestacy.com), which recently won ‘Best Short’ in the California Women’s Film Festival and also went on to win a number of other awards. The film tells the story about a woman (we both have the same first name, although spelled differently) who had breast cancer twice and is a carrier of the BRCA gene. I wanted to help raise awareness about genetic testing, as well as educate people about BRCA-related cancers.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I believe whenever a new career or path in life is chosen to always expect initial struggles. What is important is how you manage the challenges and find solutions to overcome the obstacles. Being a new filmmaker, my main struggle was finding the right people to connect with the industry.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I started Poppy Pro Productions after my dad had passed away. The name is special to me because Poppy actually refers to what my children called my dad. Both of my parents placed an emphasis on being kind and always trying to help someone in need. That is what I strive for through my company. Whatever project I work on, I like to make sure it is authentic and will have an impact on the lives of others and help make a difference.
Aside from film, I am also a watercolor and Chinese brush painting artist, currently writing another children’s book, keeping up with the lives of my three daughters and now I have to go cook dinner!
I hope 2018 will be a Happy New Year for all!
