Today we’d like to introduce you to Sun H. Kim.
Sun, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I came to this country in 2005 after graduating from a well known University called Yong In University. Yong In University is a special sports University, also known for martial arts. I have learned from a very incredible professor, Dr. Jin Bang Yang, the Technical Committee chairman of World TaeKwonDo.. I spent 10 years in Virginia learning how to teach, organize and manage a martial arts school. In 2015, I decided to open up my own school because I knew I could make a better school, and better system not just from a business aspect. I searched many different cities, and states before I finally made my mind on Sugar Land.
There are many different martial arts schools out there, and I have seen many of them whom don’t even know what they are teaching, instead they just follow what their instructor told them to do. What if their teacher is wrong? There many different trends like sports and technology that go on, there are also trends in martial arts as well. The point I am making is, as martial arts grows some of the the old techniques and knowledge in general should be constantly changing with our current society’s day and age. There is something we call a “Mcdojo”, this a school that only looks for the business side, such as promoting the student to get more money, even if they are not ready. I want to change the way people look at martial arts. My belief is, if that martial arts can change people mentally, physically, and spiritually, I would like to give authentic instruction about Korean tradition culture.
Martial arts is not just about kicking and punching, but also the practical education learned through it. Let me ask you a question, which sport will teach you moral standard? I can guarantee you that a authentic martial arts school does exactly that.
Here is our school’s mission:
– To provide the highest quality martial arts: We not only want to teach them high quality martial arts but also teach students how to show morale standard.
– To empower students with valuable life skills for life: We want out students to have a strong sense of life skills in their day to day life such as perseverance to never give up, integrity to always be honest.
– To contribute to a safe and peaceful community: We want to be apart of our community and help in anyway we can.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everything is so far so good, we are one of the fastest growing martial arts schools in Sugar Land. Of course we do have a challenge. The challenge is, that we have to fight the schools that have been here before us, because they have brought a reputation that is something I do not want for martial arts. People realize what is traditional martial arts program through our system, and they recognize us.
Please tell us about The Kick Korean Martial Arts Center.
The Kick is a professional Korean Martial Arts School. We offer classes in TaeKwonDo, HapKiDo, Kuhapdo (a Korean style iaido) and traditional strength and conditioning program. In our school, you will learn how to build a strong core, gain flexibility, improve your cardio, and more creating total fitness through martial arts practice. Our program is made for preschoolers, children, adults, and even seniors! Our instructors have experience working with all ages and types of people so it doesn’t matter how old you are, how strong you are or how flexible you are!
We are proud of our traditional martial arts program, but many people don’t want to learn it that way. We made it into a better program by adding our strength and conditioning program that is supported by modern sports science, which we feel others enjoy. Some of our other highlights is our excellent preschoolers program, our amazing leadership team that consists of our students who are looking to become the future leaders in our community. We have a partnership with the Korea TaeKwonDo Character Development Institute in Yong In University because are developing our life skills curriculum that belong to our martial arts program. This is a very unique and practical life skill curriculum, all of our students can use their life skill curriculum in their day to day life.
Right now, our society would like martial arts to provide education, so now we provide the high morale standard. This can only be learned through the martial arts program. Personally, I believe true talent should be shared with others, then it can be valuable in our society!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Martial Arts practice with others!
