Meet Tara Wilkinson of Lovlie Cakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Wilkinson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
About three years ago, I gifted my mom a cake class. I attended with her, but we both came away from the class, little to no more confident that where we started. I knew that couldn’t be the end for me, I needed to know how to make a pretty cake!

So I set out to teach myself, with much help from the college of youtube, and now I am able to not only decorate a cake but have been blessed to be able to teach others along the way!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting that perfectly “smooth” cake is not always a smooth process *no pun intended. It takes sooo many hours of practice, patience, and grace. There are so many cake styles to try, and each cake will require a new set of skills. Recipe testing and technique building require dedication and persistence.

Please tell us about Lovlie Cakes.
Since setting out to learn how to make beautiful cakes, I have been able to gain a loyal Instagram following of over 150 thousand followers. Most, like me, trying to find their place in this baking world. The fun part is, I believe that there is room for everyone! While my style differs from others, it gives inspiration to thousands and vice versa! I have been able to share some recipes from American Buttercream to French Macarons, that have been replicated all over the world. This is especially rewarding for me, as these are two things that in the beginning, I struggled heavily with.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Growing up, watching my Mom bake was such a special thing. To this day, if given the choice between “the best cake in the world” and her Apple Pie, the pie would win every time. I have tried many times, (and come mighty close) to replicating it, but in any given bake off, she would win every time. I love being able to, in my own way, fulfill her legacy.
