Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Greer.
Taylor, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In July 2018, I picked up a camera and decided to take part in the photography world as a hobby. It didn’t take long for me to realize it wasn’t what I thought it would be. I didn’t not enjoy the process, but I just didn’t find it fulfilling. Suddenly, one day I was hanging out with my cousin in September and he made a joke that I should film him a music video, that’s the day my life changed. I picked up the camera, hit record, and jumped into videography. I had absolutely no clue what I was doing, but I got the chance to be creative while music was incorporated and I loved it. After shooting his video, I attempted to edit it and that was a whole different story. I was instantly overwhelmed, but I knew I didn’t want to give up. I turned to YouTube for some help and began learning the ropes. I watched videos that taught me everything about cameras, settings, and editing.
After I felt like I’d tutored myself enough, I started booking music video shoots for $75 and I’d do two or three a day. Each time I’d learn something new and I was eventually able to quit my grocery store job of three years and become independent shooting videos. Since quitting my job I now am a full-time student at the University of Houston and full-time self-employed videographer. I’ve shot over 100 music videos since starting in September 2018. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with small businesses and multiple organizations to shoot promotional videos and recap videos for them. I never thought I would be where I am already in just a year.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road since I started filming. I’ve dealt with struggling to get booked at times, struggling to change up the monotony when editing, and one of the biggest challenges has been trying to raise my prices as my work gets better because people don’t always respect what you’re trying to do. It’s definitely a job like any other business where you have to know your worth as an entrepreneur or people will try to take advantage of your services.
TAG Productions – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
TAG Productions is a Houston based videography/photography business ran and operated solely by me, Taylor Greer. I specialize and I am mainly known for music videos. I think that TAG Productions is different because not many videographers/directors are black women so I get to show other young black girls that they can do what I do or anything else they want to do in life. I also strive to give local artists high-quality videos at the most affordable prices.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I don’t necessarily have a favorite moment because each time I work with a new client and they love the outcome of their video is a proud moment for me.
