Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Lawley.
Caroline, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
At the age of twelve, my modeling career took off in the window of Talbot’s Kids. In the fall of my sophomore year of high school, I was chosen to be on the Nordstrom Fashion Board where I networked with fashion buyers and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising staff. I signed with Wings Model Management in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio that fall. During my senior year of high school, I represented Elite Photography in their advertising for senior sessions. After moving to Nashville in August of 2014, I connected with international fashion and lifestyle photographer, Adrian Morales (Snappy Lifestyle) who truly helped me gain confidence in front of the camera.
During the spring of my freshman year of college, I walked the runway in Vanderbilt University’s Scene & Heard Fashion Show. For the second half of my sophomore year, I made the move to Houston, Texas and grew my network by interning for a local startup in uptown called Shop1990. Through them, I met Sergio Escalona, founder of Artonit Makeup, and was chosen as their “Face of Fall” in 2016. I also became certified in Fashion Industry Essentials through Parsons School of Design focusing on visual style, media production, and fashion marketing. After moving back to Nashville in January of 2017, I walked in the Vanderbilt University Scene & Heard Fashion Show again. That spring, I worked for Nashville Fashion Week where I met Nashville photographer, Gerry Navarete. Recently, I have begun starring in music videos which are set to be released in the upcoming months.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has most definitely not been smooth. The majority of my life I have cared too much about what other people think, which is easy to get caught up in especially in this industry. I do my best to follow DJ Khaled’s motto, “They don’t want me to have another anthem, so I made sure I got another anthem” and use any negativity that comes to my direction as motivation to succeed.
We’d love to hear more about Caroline Lawley.
I am a recent college graduate of Lipscomb University, so currently my goal is to become more well known while advancing my career in modeling, fashion, radio, and television. I am most proud of building a lasting network for myself in an unfamiliar city (Houston, TX) and leaving my mark on those that I had the privilege of working with. I have very high expectations for myself and once I meet my goals, I make new ones. I found it very important to never settle with the goals that I achieve.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Have multiple mentors! Find someone you admire and set aside a certain amount of time to grab coffee with them so many times a month. A lot of the positions that I have attained have come straight through networking. Go up and introduce yourself to everyone and don’t ever let your shyness hold you back (I definitely let mine do that to me all the way up through high school) – and if you are, fake it!
