Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriella Abramson.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have dreamt of being a model since my first time watching New York Fashion Week over ten years ago. My journey to becoming a model began a couple of years ago when I started working with a photographer, Amalya Shandelman. After being inspired by some unique and amazing photography, Amalya and I decided to try some of our own photos that were also different from normal. The photos that we took together were published by Vogue Magazine and from there, I began to get noticed by modeling agencies around North America. Amalya and I continued working together to create amazing art. I started to work hard to build a name for myself-which I am still in the process of doing, by using Instagram as my main platform. In addition to telling my story through Instagram, I decided to start a Youtube channel to document my life as a model and student. Youtube, as well, has helped me “build my brand.” Although I understand that I still have a long way to go in my modeling career, I am excited for the road ahead. Modeling has become a passion for me and I enjoy every photo shoot, audition, and interview that I attend.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have definitely been challenges through my journey in the modeling industry. When a photo of a person or their name becomes known to the public, many people do not hesitate to voice their opinions. I have been part of many photoshoots that have been criticized for their themes, looks, and styles. Some people have even gone as far as to say that I myself am ugly, that my nose is too big and my mouth is too small, that I am too fat, too thin, and that I will never succeed as a model. Words like those can be so hurtful, especially when they are directed toward a dream that you have had for so long. To say, “don’t listen to the opinions of others and don’t take their words to heart” although possibly inspirational, would be unrealistic. My advice to anyone starting out in any industry or career would be to take hurtful comments and use them as fuel. Show the world that you are an amazing and dedicated person with the power to be successful. Every person has a unique gift to offer the world, don’t let someone else’s thoughts on what makes you special keep you from accomplishing everything that you can.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I believe that my specialty in the modeling world is in “unique” and “controversial” photos. I love going out of the box and trying ideas and themes that have not been done by many before me. Creativity is something that I find to be extremely important in order to stand out and be successful, and I want more than anything to succeed.
What I believe sets me apart from others is my dedication and perseverance. I don’t believe that I was born a beauty queen, I believe that I was born a normal girl with a drive to make it as a model. When I set my mind to something, I give it everything that I have. I have learned that a person must try their hardest or not try at all.
I have worked hard to get to where I am today both physically and mentally.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I don’t believe that there is one incident from my childhood that drove me to want to create a name for myself. I believe that just watching New York Fashion Week and seeing other models inspired my drive for success. I do believe though. that I would not have had the guts to go after my dreams had it not been for my parents pushing me to go for the gold and be the best that I can. They continue to support me and definitely play a huge role in my accomplishments so far and in any accomplishments that I will have in the future.
