Today we’d like to introduce you to Onome Michelle Nwaneri.
Onome Michelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all began in London, 2012. I was pursuing my Master’s degree in HR. My hair was processed, damaged and thin. It didn’t help that I was too busy to pay attention to it either. So, I decided to do the “Big Chop” and start all over. It was a very liberating experience however, I had no backup plan for my hair and I needed to ease into wearing my own natural hair that low.
I had all these virgin hair extensions that I could not wear because my hair was now too low fir tracks. I wasn’t a fan of synthetic wigs either, so I did my research and came across wig making. A few popular hair stylists had also picked the upcoming trend. Wigs are very good for protective styling, they are versatile, saves time and money in the long run. It was what my hair needed to look great while I cater to my natural hair underneath. So, I learned all the basics from practicing what I watched on YouTube.
The following year, I got married and moved to the United States. I still made wigs mostly for myself and friends. They saw potential in what I did and encouraged me to extend my services to the public. Late 2016, I got further training from the famous wigmaker “Tamika Gibson” to upgrade my wig making from hand stitching to machine sewing and that changed everything for TNC. I have learned so much about my craft and upgraded my skills in the past year. I am always open to learning and the feedback has been amazing.
I have amazing clients who enjoy what I create and keep encouraging me; TNC remains grateful for all the support. There are so many great things to come for the brand and I hope to carry everyone on this journey with me.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like everything in life, we are met with challenges. I encountered business, logistics and personal challenges that had an impact on my business.
One major challenge was finding the right vendors or team. I never want to compromise the quality of my product for profit, so I was extra demanding when it came to my vendors. Most were a miss until I found the good ones but that’s part of the risk you take as an entrepreneur. I also had a complicated pregnancy that caused a big shift in the dynamics of my business. I had to put my health first and that of my family.
My advice to women who are about to begin their journey as an entrepreneur is to NEVER GIVE UP. You will grow, you will experience setbacks but keep your eye fixed on the vision. Enjoy your journey and see the beauty of your evolution as you progress. NEVER STOP LEARNING! Knowledge is power and when you think you know it all, something new and better always comes. BE OPEN TO FEEDBACK from your clients; these relationships need to be maintained to keep them coming back. And finally, SEEK ASSISTANCE if you need it especially if you struggle with WORK-LIFE BALANCE. Sometimes the mission isn’t meant to be carried by one person. It’s even harder for the working mum with families and businesses. At some point, you would have to DELEGATE for your business to grow.
