Today we’d like to introduce you to Satin Williams.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Satin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
At the age of seven, I was already in the kitchen. Bacon was one of my dad’s favorites breakfast foods, so daddy’s little girl would pull up a chair to the stove and hope for the best. Every time I was done, my dad would say “this is the best bacon I’ve ever eaten.” I knew right then, and there I enjoyed making others happy with my cooking. Their expressions would give me so much joy, and please don’t let them do the eating dance, that would make my day! As I got older, cooking became my stress relief. Nothing is more relaxing than coming home creating something for my family and friends. My daughter is in love with my Chicken Alfredo, but what my daughter didn’t know was how stressful my day at work was. I was not happy with my working situation, and her smile after eating my food made me realize that I wanted something of my own; something I could pass down to my kids. That night, Moni’s Southern Cuisines was created. Scared, worried, whatever word of uncertainty you can think of, that was me! I just put myself out there, and people started biting, literally. I was born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale Florida, so being surrounded by such a huge melting pot had a huge impact on my dishes. I was able to experience an array of foods and flavors. Plus, growing up and spending so much time in the kitchen helping my grandmother cook traditional Southern-style foods added the necessary twist to my culinary skills.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every day has its obstacles and owning a business is a 24/7 job. Don’t let your beginning failures be permanent failures. Be sure to learn from every mistake you make, and remember that If you’re not making mistakes, you are not learning. My first time cooking bacon was a learning experience. My dad told me that I can’t be afraid of the bacon, and to not let the bacon defeat me. I am still overcoming obstacles with my business and learning that everyone will not support or see your visions as you do. That negativity comes with your quest for success, but staying positive and focused overcomes those who stand against you.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Moni’s Southern Cuisines – what should we know?
Moni’s specializes in southern comfort foods with a Caribbean cuisine twist. Our Fried Ribs is one of our best sellers, and what many continue to rave about. My “Hunch Punch” is also a crowd favorite. I’d say that I’m most proud of being able to provide a different style to Southern Comfort food.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
My most significant advice for young women embarking on this journey is to recognize and include your worth. One of the hardest things about owning a business is letting people know your talent is worth paying for. Don’t be afraid to say “this is my price.”
