Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Postany.
Travis, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Born and raised in Pearland, TX, I knew at an early age I wanted to be an athlete, I played every sport up until I was 15 years old and then chose to pursue BMX full time. My senior year of High School turned professional and I spent the next 12 years traveling the world competing on my bike. I was doing all of my training in Conroe, TX at a friend’s house so in 2007, I made the move from Pearland to The Woodlands. During this time, I started to attend The Woodlands United Methodist Church, where I would meet my future wife, Leslie who was working as one of the youth pastors. I continued to ride and train until October 29th, 2010, when my mom (Jenese Gillam) passed away from a stroke. Three days later, I found out my dad (Joe Post any) had stage four cancer and I stopped riding to take over his company while he went through cancer treatments. During this time (April 2011), I proposed to Leslie and we set our wedding date for Oct 29th, 2011.
Oct 12th, two weeks before our wedding, my dad passed away. The next two years were fun, hard, happy, and sad. It was a roller coaster of emotions from getting married to losing both parents, to changing careers. We made it through and in 2013, we had our first son, Maverick. The following year I decided to sell my dad’s company (International Precision Balancing) to open a life long dream of mine, a sports camp. Leslie and I had moved to Montgomery, TX, where we built Rebel Run Sports Camp, an extreme sports camp for BMX, Skateboards, and Scooters. Kids from around the world would come and stay for weeks and months at a time to train and ride.
In 2015 we had our second son, Knight and bought a new piece of property nearby to move the camp and expand. However, as time went on, I was realizing I was ready to move on from the sports world and wanted to build a better future for my family. One of my good friends Carl McKenzie and I had been talking about joining forces for a while and adding little league fields to the camp on the new property. I would run the extreme sports side and he would run the baseball side. This was the plan until one day at a lunch meeting to talk about the new venture I randomly suggested we throw all these ideas away and build a wedding venue. He said, sounds good! Leslie and I ran our last camp in August of 2017 after four very successful years, which we loved every second of.
Carl and I then began to dream up The Luminaire. After extensive research of the wedding and venue industry, we realized we had to build something grand and unique to set ourselves apart. Both of our families have a heart for ministry and want to use our gifts and business to serve others in and around our community. We do not want to be known only as a wedding venue. The Luminaire has been a labor of love for three years and we are now set to be complete September 15th, 2020. Our first open house will be open to the public on September 27th from 6 pm-9 pm and our first event will be October 10th. It has been extremely exciting watching The Luminaire come to life and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle came when we were annexed by the city of Conroe during construction. This created huge setbacks as we then had to meet their requirements on everything like water and sewage, however, they do not supply us with either of those things and have no intention to do so. This caused a huge increase in budget we were not expecting and put a big hardship on our families.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Luminaire – what should we know?
The Luminaire is a wedding and event venue. We have designed and created a beautiful, timeless place to act as the perfect venue for any wedding, gala, or corporate event. While our elegant design is that of what you would find in the city, we are tucked away in a secluded oasis of trees. You can see every corner and side of our venue and we have spent much time to make sure every angle can be a worthy photo spot.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Using our gifts, talents, and resources to serve The Lord. Customer service. Attention to detail.
