Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Briones.
Veronica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My sister Itzel and I have always had a thing for helping others, listening to them, and at the same time, making them feel good about themselves. I’ve always had a fascination with color and seeing how one thing can transform into another; she was all about hair and taking care of it. One day, we decided that we could take our passion for helping others and for all things beauty and “mash” them together. We chose the name “Reign of Beauty” thanks to my younger brother, Anselmo, he one day teased about how we always made a huge deal about getting ready as if we were in a beauty pageant and the name stuck. We began doing hair and makeup at home, for free, with our friends and family, and slowly saved money for classes to further our education. Now, we’re happy to be expanding with more clients, photo shoots, SFX Makeup, and hopefully one day to be teaching what we’ve learned.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, there’s always a little bit of self-doubt when you start something new. I also think there’s still a bit of a stigma when it comes to the fine arts. We always had support from our family and friends but we still got occasional, “but this is part-time, right? Is it a hobby? you’re keeping your job right?”. I know they didn’t mean harm but still made us somewhat afraid. But if we weren’t afraid about taking this leap of faith, I would say we weren’t passionate enough. We both finished our BA in the social services field and continue to have full-time jobs in order to continue this passion of ours.
When we started. we didn’t know how or where to start, we knew we needed kits so our researched begun. At first, we didn’t know how much classes, makeup, and hair tools would cost lol I mean… “it’s just a lipstick right?”… wrong! When you realize you need about 30 shades of red and Bobby pins to seem to disappear all the time, you have to find a way to refill that kit but it’s always worth it!
Please tell us about Reign of Beauty.
We specialize in makeup application and hair styling, we can achieve simple natural looks and transform them into extreme special effects look if you want us to. As a team, we have the flexibility of getting multiple clients at once and get the results they’re expecting. We are willing to travel throughout Houston to make the clients experience a smooth one. We truly are passionate about what we do, it’s not just about the money we can take back home at the end of the day. Seeing how much a little makeup and hairstyling can help a person bring out their inner beauty is what keeps us going. When we have someone in our chair, they’re the most important person in that room. We get to hear about their day and we get that instant gratification as soon as they see themselves in the mirror.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think if I had to change anything it would be to not second guess myself or overthink and start sooner. Life is so short, cliche, I know, but you should do what makes you happy and if it’s going to make others equally as happy, why not do it!
Another thing would be to not get so caught up with social media, it’s important to stay up to date with trends but sometimes It can hinder your success, and I have been guilty of that.
