Mustafa Ozsoy of Rice Village on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Mustafa Ozsoy and have shared our conversation below.

Mustafa , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Having a nice Turkish breakfast and strong Turkish coffee to start with my day!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have been running a Pasha Turkish restaurant more than two decades in Rice Village Houston. I interacted with people every single day. Seeing them as a human not a costumer. Showing them I am one of them with all ups and downs, trying to make them feel safe and comfortable.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Not accepting them as who they are! Making them feel they are unique no matter how different they might be.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
People much learn from their failures than from their successes. People have tendency that they are successful because of their qualities, so it is granted.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Everything is going to be fine!

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
My conversations besides my food.
