Patrick Moss on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Patrick Moss. Check out our conversation below.

Patrick, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I am currently addressing health issues that has resulted in changes in my lifestyle. I have made tremendous progress over the past 6 months. I usually begin my day around 6:00 AM. I’ll start by tuning in to the local news and preparing to take my morning meds. Afterwards, I’ll decide if I’ll go for a walk or stretch and exercise at home. I will admit that it’s one or the other on any given day. Upon retuning home, I’ll wind down with a high protein and fiber breakfast. Time is set aside then to check emails and follow up on social media. As a Christmas performer, the holidays are approaching and early booking has commenced. This includes reviewing and drafting contract booking agreements. This is also the time of year to renew liability insurance, obtain background checks, and updating W-9’s.

Throughout my day, I have spent time researching and seeking a different book publisher. Nearer to the holidays, I have plans to relaunch my first children’s book. Here and there, I find time to work on completing my second children’s book. No deadline set for it just yet. In addition, I am working to enhace my performance this season by adding to my craft of entertaining. For home visits, I am incorporating a little bit of magic and presenting KWANZAA in detail. At the beginning of the year, I attended a Santa Claus convention in San Antonio, Texas, hosted by North Pole Cornerstones. There, I had the privilage of sharing as an instructor the African American tradition of KWANZAA. The interactive presentation was well received and I look forward to presenting it during the 2025 Christmas season. While at the Santa school, we network amongst fellow collegues, learn new ideas of performing, and leave with a commitment of sharing peace, love, and joy all year long.

This is the time of year that as a Christmas performer we take time to go through our wardrobe to make certain its clean, crisp, and fresh for the upcoming season. I have trimmed down a bit and a few minor adjustments and alterations may need to be done. Now is the time to get that done. Some may not know, but there is more to being Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, an Elf, or any Christmas performer than donning the suit, smiling, and taking pictures.

Somewhere during the day lunch plays a small role. As I get older, I am learning that my health is more important then comes my appearance. I have created a daily regimen to stay on track with my diet and things are working out well. In all, it’s the parents that look for the jolly fat fellow in red. The children only see the smile and twinkle in Santa’s eye. By now, the evening has approached and it’s time for dinner and night meds. Then the cycle pretty much repeats itself.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Patrick Moss also known as Santa Pat. I am the owner of Black Santa EFX, LLC where I appear in person as a natural bearded Black Santa. I am also a first time children’s book author: A Best Friend’s Christmas. The book has also been translated in Spanish: Una Navida de Mejores Amigos. I am looking to relaunch them both in October. What’s unique about my brand is its authenticity. I have eight different custom Santa suits that were designed by me. Some of the fabric was shipped directly from Ghana, West Africa. The concept was to capture the essence of the Black cuture. I created this company to provide another outlet of diversity to meet the demands of the community. As we know, representation is important.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
The children who come to visit with me during the Christmas holidays taught me the most about work. Every child is different. They each have their own pesonality. They respond differently. In communicating with them, I have found it best to be a good listener. In some cases, they may not know how to express themselves, Other times, you’ve got to be smart and read between the lines. However, in all cases, you have simply got to let them be kids. Observe and interact with them more and you will learn a lot.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of taking risks has held me back in some parts of my life. I have always “played it safe” and “gone by the books” as I journeyed through corporate America. I have been responsible and owned up to my mistakes. What has stressed me out in the past is knowing I would have to give in account for that outcome. Now that I am the sole owner, I have realized that risks are destined in operating a business and it falls on me.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is the real me. It would be foolish to take on a persona that I would not be able to maintain and keep up with. Why be someone else when you can be you?

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The story I hope people tell about me when I am gone is how much I loved the world, my family and friends, and my work during the Christmas holidays as Santa. I would hope that they remember how much joy I brought with creating memories, smiles and laughter. Most importantly, I hope they remember to spead love and peace.
