Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Jass.
Hi Ashley, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My love for makeup began when I was a teenager, around 13 or 14 years old. At the time, I was constantly participating in my friends’ and family members’ quinceañeras, and I can still remember the exact moment makeup changed my life.
We had a trial session scheduled with my cousin’s makeup artist to see how she planned to do our makeup for her quinceañera. Unfortunately, I had a black eye from an accident in gym class. When the makeup was finished, I remember a few of the girls gasping, and my immediate thought was, “Oh man, my eye must look really bad.”
But it was quite the opposite.
She had covered it so beautifully that you could barely tell. The gold, shimmering eyeshadow and winged liner made my blue eyes pop, and I was completely fascinated by what makeup could do. I was hooked from that day forward.
This was before YouTube existed, so I didn’t have tutorials or social media to turn to. All I had were Cosmo magazines, whatever makeup my mom no longer wanted, and my imagination. I would study the models in the magazines and use the makeup my mom gave me to practice recreating their looks. Sometimes I would even draw eyeliner or different designs directly onto the models in the magazines with pens—which, needless to say, drove my mother absolutely crazy! 😂
From then on, I practiced consistently on myself, experimenting with the latest trends featured in every new magazine I could get my hands on.
Over time, my mom helped me build my makeup collection throughout high school, and by my senior year, I had started occasionally practicing on other people as well.
As the years went on, my passion continued to grow. I ventured into special effects makeup, explored different styles and techniques, and continued challenging myself to learn, improve, and perfect my craft in any way I could.
To me, makeup is so much more than simply putting on makeup. It’s a passion. It’s an art. It’s a creative outlet, a way to make someone feel confident and beautiful, and, in a sense, even a form of therapy for me.
What started as a teenage girl experimenting with her mom’s old makeup and Cosmo magazines has grown into something that I truly love—and I’m still learning, creating, and falling in love with the art of makeup every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, I can’t sit here and say that it has been perfect throughout the years. Life happens, and there were times when makeup simply wasn’t enough to pay the bills. In the years between then and now, I became a mother to two beautiful children, and I began building a career in the financial world, temporarily putting makeup on the back burner.
Over the years, the influx of bookings has naturally ebbed and flowed, but my love for makeup never went away. Now, with my youngest having been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, I’ve found myself slowly picking up my brushes again whenever I can. Between the cost of doctors, therapy, and everything that comes with supporting him, being able to return to makeup has become another way for me to contribute and help provide for my family.
And honestly, as challenging as life’s circumstances can be, there’s something beautiful about it all coming full circle. What started as something I loved has found its way back into my life—allowing me to support my son while also reconnecting with a part of myself that I never truly stopped loving.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As someone who has always had a creative side, makeup isn’t the only form of art I enjoy exploring. I also love painting canvases, creating custom designs on denim and clothing, bedazzling clothing and other items, and creating henna tattoos.
Being a stay-at-home mom has given me the opportunity to make more time for these creative outlets when I’m not busy taking care of my kids. Each craft gives me a different way to express myself, and honestly, creating has always been a form of therapy for me.
At the end of a long day, being able to sit down and create something with my hands is one of my favorite ways to unwind and relieve stress.
What makes you happy?
1000% my family. I truly don’t know what I would do without them. My husband is my greatest support system and is always there to help me with whatever I need. My kids are my entire world and definitely keep me on my toes!
My beautiful daughter is about to turn 15, and my son is 2. Life at home is never boring—it’s filled with laughter, love, and plenty of beautiful chaos. They are my biggest motivation, my greatest blessings, and the reason I continue to push myself to grow and pursue the things I love.
