Today we’d like to introduce you to Tahj Steen.
Hi Tahj, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As for the beginnings of my career, I began recording at 16 years old towards my senior year but writing music a few years prior to that around 12/13. My father was an artist on his youth in New Orleans prior to me and seeing the interest I was taking (along with doing choir and fine arts adjacent projects through my middle and high school years) he knew a friend that was recording music in his townhome (the early beginnings of Live from the Pentagon) and the first few sessions that I had and the songs and music I could make at the pace I was, they could tell this was a natural fit for me. Past my 20’s it would become something that started to fall to the wayside due to rebuilding in my personal life but in more recent years have found a reignited passion and the belief to elevate my music to a worldwide platform.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While being in music and an artist been the most fun times I’ve had in my life, the times outside of it aren’t the most glamorous part and the things that’ve held me back to sticking to the path consistently. Personal wise, the environment around me and interpersonal moments that took a turn for the worst caused my mental health dive for a few years really removed me from being creative and wanting to be a public figure. But reconnecting with close friends that breathed life back into me and telling me “Allowing your music and talent to go to waste would be a disservice to anyone that can hear this” was the wake up call for me; that the experiences and story I have to put on a pen, the good and bad, are a gift that to the world that anyone can use to uplift themselves and remind them that there will always be a better tomorrow than a bad yesterday and we have one life to live to do the most with.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a vocalist that specializes in hip-hop, pop and R&B. I’m most proud of my determination, creativity and care that I show to my commitment to my craft. I find myself different compared to other artists as I’m always encouraging individuals also working in the same industry as me to push and dig to become their best self and allow it to show in their craft.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
When it comes to risks I feel like I can be very calculated and think of the long term faster than the short gratification of what something may bring if I jump the gun too early. Sometimes there’s a song I complete that I really really like and get good feedback on but if it’s not release ready, the record won’t get the traction it’s supposed to when you put the proper resources, marketing and time behind it to give it the life it needs.
