Story & Lesson Highlights with McKayla Miller

We recently had the chance to connect with McKayla Miller and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning McKayla , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
The last time I was interviewed, I was working part-time in Houston as a model. I’m still based in Houston, but my “normal” has changed a lot since then. These days, I’m a full-time prehealth graduate student and a part-time author. A typical day now includes attending classes, studying, writing, developing marketing campaigns for my books, and engaging with my readers through social media.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an indie author specializing in romantic comedies set in fantasy worlds. I currently have two books published: ‘Under the World’ and ‘From Heaven to Eden’.

‘Under the World’ follows Violaine, a hunter sworn to protect humans from the supernatural. When she’s killed in combat, she awakens in the underworld as the very creature she once hunted. Bound to a stranger by an unbreakable marriage bond, Violaine must unravel the truth behind her death, navigate the dangerous politics of the dead, and fight for her freedom or risk becoming just another pawn in the underworld’s deadly games.

‘From Heaven to Eden’ takes place in a realm where angels and demons compete for supremacy. Arden, accused of a crime he didn’t commit, is cast out from his clan and sold to two powerful angels of the heavenly realm. Trapped between forces of power and deception, he discovers secrets hidden in his blood that could alter everything. Heaven’s gates may gleam with gold, but for Arden, they’re nothing more than another cage.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
My modeling career has served its purpose, and I feel ready to let it go. It was a wonderful chapter of my life; I loved every second of it and look back with both pride and gratitude. The experiences and relationships I gained during that time shaped me, not only as a person but also as a creative. Even now, the influence of that industry continues to inspire my writing.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I’m releasing a free ebook on September 22 titled ‘Where Our Blue Is’. The story follows Mackie May, a girl of many lives—runway model, author, aspiring doctor— but when her ambitions stall and her sense of self begins to unravel, she finds herself drifting between the lives she’s already lived until a chance encounter at a Houston dive bar introduces her to Jude Sigerton— a man who looks suspiciously like a hot anime villain.

If the story feels familiar, that’s intentional, it’s heavily inspired by some of the struggles I’ve faced in my own life. Writing it gave me the chance to transform pain and hardship into something powerful and meaningful: a story about resilience and self-discovery. I hope ‘Where Our Blue Is’ helps others who may be navigating similar challenges find strength in their own journey.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Everyone knows that my characters mean the world to me! My stories are deeply character driven because I take great care in crafting each one—considering everything from their appearance and tone of voice to their backstories and motivations. It’s a deliberate and loving process, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see readers connect with these characters, develop favorites, and enjoy watching them interact. Knowing that my readers carry them with them long after the story ends is one of the greatest joys of being an author.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m writing!
