We recently had the chance to connect with Melvin Nelson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Melvin , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Being a dog dad has truly shown me a newfound appreciation for life.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Melvin Nelson, born and raised in Port Arthur, Texas, and now living just outside of Houston. Lil Melvin’s Bakehouse started out as me baking for family and house guests, and over time it grew into a full home bakery. My mission has always been to keep that true at home baking feel, focusing on traditional pound cakes and cookies made with real care and flavor.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Going through my cancer journey has taught me so much. I was diagnosed in June of 2022, and ever since, it’s been a true journey of learning, strength, and growth. Navigating everything from treatment to recovery has given me a new outlook on life and a deeper appreciation for every moment.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been plenty of times when I thought about giving up on my business. Some weeks, sales are slow, prices keep rising, and I run into roadblocks that feel completely out of my control. But just when I’m ready to quit, a customer always shows up and places an order reminding me why I started and that my work still matters.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
I’ve learned to stay true to why I started. When you start chasing what’s popular at the moment, you lose sight of your core customers the ones who supported you from the beginning and helped your business grow. Staying authentic is what keeps the heart of Lil Melvin’s Bakehouse alive.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I am a bit of a loner, and I’m at peace with that. I enjoy doing things on my own exploring new places, spending quiet time, building legos and listening to my vinyl collection. Those moments keep me grounded and give me space to recharge and reflect.
