Story & Lesson Highlights with Victoria Johnson of North of Houston

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Victoria Johnson . Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Victoria , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I really enjoy working out. I have been on a weight loss journey for two years and have lost nearly 50 lbs. I changed my diet and continue to exercise. I also enjoy journaling. All of this has been a form of self therapy for me.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Victoria and I am 43 years old. I have two daughters, Aaliyah and Stormi. Aaliyah is 18 and Stormi is 12. I am the owner of Skye Breese Photography. I have done a little bit of everything in my photo business, but I really enjoy shooting events. Indigenous Powwows and culture are my specialty. Both of my daughters dance, so we travel to several powwows a year. That has given me the opportunity to capture the dancing and culture.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was just a shy 8 year old girl from a small Louisiana town who loved taking pictures for fun. I started with disposable film cameras and digital point and shoot cameras. It was my escape from the rest of the world.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I believe the fear of rejection has held me back the most in my life. I was afraid of showing my work the first few years of my small business. After I began to submit my work to different publications, the opportunities came. I have had my work published and exhibited in different parts of the United States including in Canada and in the UK.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie the industry tells us is that you have to have the best photo gear. You don’t have to have the best to start. You don’t have to be like everyone else. You just have to get out there and start. Don’t compare yourself to others.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I have my camera. It is my therapy. It is my passion. It makes life just a little bit better. It has gotten me through some hard times in my life.
