Every neighborhood in Houston has its own vibe, style, culture and history, but what consistently amazes us is not what differentiates the various neighborhoods but rather what they all have in common. From the Fourth Ward to Sugar Land (and everywhere in between) we’ve been blown away by how many creative and talented people call Houston home. Check out some of the inspiring stories we’ve discovered throughout the city.

They lie on us and didn’t realize how it would affect us. I work very hard and took passion in what I did and took it to a whole different level! I differentiated myself from the rest and made it a whole party on wheels .
So told God to take me out of this world, or give me a reason to live. He gave me a reason to live and said Shelly Castle, I am not done with you yet! So I did it and started my own company with literally nothing and not even knowing what to do or how to run a business or what all I would need to be a success! Read more>>

In 2020, my life took a painful turn when I lost my brother Micah. This loss marked the beginning of a series of tragedies. I later lost my grandmother Susan in 2022, my uncle Torey that same year, close friends, and, most recently, my uncle Roy and brother Rashad in 2024. Each loss left a profound impact on me, shaping my perspective on life and deepening my commitment to supporting others through grief and mental health challenges. Read more>>

Starting a business is never a smooth road; it’s a continuous process of trial and error. You learn as you grow, diving deeper into research to discover what works best for you and your business. Every decision requires careful consideration and a willingness to take risks. The journey has certainly been challenging, particularly when it comes to managing small yet important details to the backend—things like keeping up with inventory, marketing, meeting the demands for juice, and navigating the fluctuating market prices for produce. I moved to Hawaii by myself to work on an organic fruit farm on the westside of Oahu. I lived in a tent in an art village for a month, and got to paint my first mural there. I had only planned to stay for a month or two, but spontaneously decided to book a one-way to Maui after. I fell in love with the magical healing mana of the island after spending hours on hours, barefoot in the rich soil of the earth. The connection I made by rooting with the land deeply nurtured my soul & healed my inner child. It was the first time I ever felt at home, in this human body. Read more>>

Learning from her was transformative. Under her guidance, I came to see floral design as a living, breathing art form. What started as curiosity quickly became passion. Working with flowers awakened something joyful and grounding in me—something I hadn’t felt in any other medium. There’s something magical about working with materials that are alive, delicate, and ever-changing. Each bloom has its own character, its own voice. Arranging them feels like composing a symphony where every element matters, and nothing lasts forever—which only adds to its beauty. Over time, this passion evolved into purpose. Read more>>

After earning my business degree from the University of Lima, I, like many young graduates at the time, found myself facing a difficult reality. Peru was going through a turbulent period, economically, socially, and politically. Job opportunities were scarce, especially for recent graduates with no work experience. After six months of trying to secure a job and facing closed doors, I made the bold decision to leave my home country and seek new possibilities in the United States. Read more>>

It took serious hustle and endurance, especially since the subway was my main source of transportation. I found myself lugging all my equipment through train stations and enduring all kinds of weather, racing to make appointments on time. But at the end of the day, it was a true blessing. I was living my dream, and that made every challenge worth it. Read more>>

I became a licensed mental health therapist, a public speaker, and eventually a pastor. I started sharing my story in churches, juvenile detention centers, and legislative chambers, not to shame the foster care system, but to advocate for reform and to let other survivors know that they are not forgotten. My platform grew, and so did my sense of responsibility. I realized my life wasn’t spared just for my own freedom, it was so I could help liberate others still trapped in cycles of generational trauma and systemic neglect. Read more>>

I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, to Diane and the late Henry Respert; I graduated high school as Valedictorian and received numerous school and state-level academic and athletic awards. In 2002, I graduated with a B.A. in Economics, as a Ronald E. McNair Research Scholar, from Oberlin College in Ohio. I spent 2.5 seasons as an award-winning athlete on the women’s basketball team. My goal was to work in finance within the business sector, particularly in the arts. Read more>>

I’ve been fortunate to work with amazing clients who trust my vision for their brands, which definitely helps make the journey more rewarding. But like anything worth having, it hasn’t always been smooth. There are challenges that come with growing a business and maintaining high standards. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is not to overload my plate. I’m very intentional about the clients I take on because I want to give each one the quality, focus, and creativity they deserve. That balance helps me avoid unnecessary bumps in the road and ensures my clients always get the best of me and what I have to offer. Read more>>

I’m from Cincinnati Ohio, but I live in Houston. Growing up as the middle child of 5, often made me the black sheep in my family. I’m the shortest, most petite, and often considered the “sensitive kid” out of all of my siblings. Which made me extremely insecure growing up, I was never your typical “voluptuous” woman. My strong physique, a-cup breasts, small frame, often separated me from my siblings & girls at school. My parents were extremely strict growing up. I wasn’t allowed to go to the movies, the mall, no friends house to sleep over (as I got older, I became more grateful) no social media until I was 18. Read more>>

The stability in that relationship allowed me to utilize time to focus on the next phase of my plans, which was to have a brick and mortar. In 2019 that goal was reached when we opened a ghost kitchen location in Midtown. The ghost kitchen concept was new to us but it was the perfect strategy for us because Covid showed its ugly face and while brick and mortar restaurants were closing, we were open because we were only take-out and delivery. While the model proved itself to be the right model, that location had too many hurdles to overcome to justify the effort, so we moved our location to Missouri City where we proudly and graciously serve the Missouri City/Sugarland/Fresno/Stafford communities. I grew up watching my mom run a small business and saw firsthand how easily the hustle can take over your life. After a decade in corporate operations as an engineer specializing in continuous improvement and systems, I realized that the people who needed this clarity most weren’t the corporate giants, they were small business owners doing everything themselves. That’s why I started Small Business Lean: to give entrepreneurs the tools, structure, and strategic support they need to run a business that works for their life, not the other way around. In January 2025, after months of reflection, therapy, and self-discovery, I wrote my resignation letter. It was a heavy decision, but deep down, I knew it was time to move on. I had a vision—a dream—to create something that would allow me to share my gifts with the world. I wasn’t exactly sure how it would all unfold, but I felt a deep knowing that it would. The vision I had wasn’t just about teaching dance; it was about creating an environment of joy, of freedom, of connection. Read more>>

Definitely not a smooth ride. Many obstacles came from lack of opportunities which lead me to start doing my own films to sharpen my craft. After essentially mastering doing a lot with a little, now the challenges come with higher paying opportunities and roles that test my range and not just stereotype roles or roles I’ve already done. Houston is on the come up but there is a huge gap in opportunities for working actors as myself . I have faith that bigger and better things will be coming to Houston , and with the films I’ve done recently, believe they will shed light on the quality we have out here in Houston. Read more>>

On paper, I had made it. I was living in Cincinnati and leading national public relations for Kroger, the largest grocery retailer in the country, and serving as an adviser to the CEO and other senior executives, hopping on and off planes from New York to Los Angeles, and everywhere in between, producing segments with Good Morning America and TODAY, rolling out nationwide campaigns seen by millions, managing high-stakes, complex crises, and showing up as a spokesperson for the brand. Over the last few years, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have opportunities to travel across Texas, Tennessee, and several other states to perform and to collaborate and learn from a host of music industry veterans. A few months later, I moved to LA, and that’s where everything started to fall into place. I learned how clothing is made from start to finish and finally felt like I was exactly where I needed to be. I also took on a role running operations for a local brand, and over time, discovered how much I enjoyed that side of the business. I learned a lot, and it pushed me in new ways. Read more>>

This process was anything but a smooth road! There were several times I wanted to throw in the towel and say forget it, but I pushed through. After talking to several other small business owners, I realized I was not alone in the problems I was having from contractor woes to city permitting to finances. Starting a brick-and-mortar business is definitely not for the weak, but I found the inner strength and relied on my faith to get me to the finish line. Read more>>

I started dropping songs in 2021 on my iPhone microphone and that’s the only set up I had for a little while. Eventually, I saved up to get a mic and interface and it really was a journey. It’s definitely a process, but it feels so good to know that I did it all on my own. i’ve managed to have a song on the BBC radio in England and right now I’m getting ready for my debut album. I’m relatively new to Houston so I’ve been trying to dip my feet in the water and get out more. I moved to Houston to work with an artist directly to test the business idea, It worked but I wasn’t happy just helping one artist to test the business idea. After school, in 2002, I entered the whirlwind world of performing arts as a marketer. Over the course of the first 15 years of my career, I promoted shows in every theater in downtown Houston. From the Alley Theatre, to the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, to Jones Hall, to the Wortham Center, I marketed shows and the organizations that present them on those stages. On top of that, during my time at Broadway Across America, where I got my start, I was also able to oversee marketing for our shows in Nashville, Austin, and Omaha. Read more>>

For me, becoming a veterinarian was always the goal. Knowing that the U.S. offers the best veterinary education in the world, I moved here in 2008 to attend Purdue University, where I later earned my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Since then, I’ve been committed to lifelong learning—focusing on senior pet care, dentistry, internal medicine, and feline medicine. I completed a two-year feline medicine course through the University of Sydney’s Center for Veterinary Education and plan to pursue board certification in feline practice. Thank you for sharing my story and my art. As an artist we normally sit in the background… and create. We help create the visions, the mood boards and then execute those visions in our minds eye onto the human canvas.
It’s a never ending journey of the next creation. So, thank you, voyage magazine, for considering me one of Houston’s inspiring stories.

Would love to know how to be in contact with you. We have a great story to tell.
Through the end of the year, Solis Mammography – the nation’s largest independent provider of breast screening services – presents its “Help Us Help Houston” campaign through its seven locations across the greater Houston region. From now through the end of the year, patients who schedule and complete their annual screening mammogram at Solis Mammography, will also give the gift of restoration and recovery.
For every mammogram appointment scheduled and completed at any Solis Mammography center in the Houston area between Oct. 23 and Dec. 31, $10 will be donated to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund by Solis Mammography and its partners in the effort, HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division and Hologic. To signal their participation in the campaign, all patients need to do is use the code “Harvey” when they check-in for their appointment.
The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund was established by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. The fund is administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation. Because of the immense need in and around Houston, this fund is dedicated to relieving gaps that are not met by other local and federal efforts for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
