Every neighborhood in Houston has its own vibe, style, culture and history, but what consistently amazes us is not what differentiates the various neighborhoods but rather what they all have in common. From the Fourth Ward to Sugar Land (and everywhere in between) we’ve been blown away by how many creative and talented people call Houston home. Check out some of the inspiring stories we’ve discovered throughout the city.

That was the turning point. I realized my practices had the power to change lives. So, I started growing my social media platforms and sharing what I had learned. There’s a fine line between giving up and surrendering. After countless hours of posting with no clients, no views, no clicks, and no likes—I surrendered. I handed it all over to the universe, and that’s when everything shifted. I was prepared to wake up and start the job search again. Read More>>
Shelly Bourns
My name is Shelly Bourns. I was born in Houston and raised in Sugarland Texas. I became a mother at the age of 21 in 2002. I was always very independent after my daughters father passed shortly before my due date. At an early age I started a career of building custom fishing rods for many years. I chose this path because I was taking care of my father in my later 20s early 30s. I did a lot of shark fishing. I was known at the time as the only female rod builder. I was interviewed by 3 magazines including Gulf coast Mariner out of Galveston and a couple of others including one out of Florida called Girls Guns and Rods! Read More>>

My passion for photography ignited at a young age, allowing me to connect deeply with the world, its people, and communities through my lens. As a deaf person, I often hear that we possess a unique ability to engage our senses, which sets us apart in beautiful ways. Read More>>

The bar and restaurant business is definitely tough. You’re only as good as your last week! Technically, I started working at The Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery (ACPS) in 2020 when I began my aesthetic surgery fellowship. I chose to pursue this fellowship after my residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery to gain supplemental training in aesthetic surgery procedures. The ACPS team instantly made me feel like I had found my home for the long run. I admired their emphasis on patient safety and their dedication to ongoing education and research in aesthetics. Thank you for sharing my story and my art. As an artist we normally sit in the background… and create. We help create the visions, the mood boards and then execute those visions in our minds eye onto the human canvas.
It’s a never ending journey of the next creation. So, thank you, voyage magazine, for considering me one of Houston’s inspiring stories.

Would love to know how to be in contact with you. We have a great story to tell.
Through the end of the year, Solis Mammography – the nation’s largest independent provider of breast screening services – presents its “Help Us Help Houston” campaign through its seven locations across the greater Houston region. From now through the end of the year, patients who schedule and complete their annual screening mammogram at Solis Mammography, will also give the gift of restoration and recovery.
For every mammogram appointment scheduled and completed at any Solis Mammography center in the Houston area between Oct. 23 and Dec. 31, $10 will be donated to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund by Solis Mammography and its partners in the effort, HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division and Hologic. To signal their participation in the campaign, all patients need to do is use the code “Harvey” when they check-in for their appointment.
The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund was established by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. The fund is administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation. Because of the immense need in and around Houston, this fund is dedicated to relieving gaps that are not met by other local and federal efforts for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
