Houston’s Most Inspiring Stories

Every neighborhood in Houston has its own vibe, style, culture and history, but what consistently amazes us is not what differentiates the various neighborhoods but rather what they all have in common.  From the Fourth Ward to Sugar Land (and everywhere in between) we’ve been blown away by how many creative and talented people call Houston home.  Check out some of the inspiring stories we’ve discovered throughout the city.

But my journey hasn’t come without its battles. I went viral for sharing my PCOS pregnancy story—after years of infertility, silent struggles, and hormonal challenges, I experienced the miracle of motherhood. Weight loss wasn’t easy either; every pound lost felt like a fight against my own body. Spiritually, mentally, and physically, I’ve had to overcome deep obstacles to get where I am today. But through it all, my faith in God kept me centered. I see my business as a form of ministry—one rooted in grace, healing, and love. My mission is to serve my community with that same compassion, helping clients look and feel their best from the inside out. Read more>>

I hit the ground running as a full-time stylist in August of 2019. I took the time to learn to work with all textures of hair by obtaining multiple certifications in color, cuts, and styling which were foundational in my efforts to carve out a niche method for textured hair. In 2021, I created Curl Boss, LLC and opened my studio. At that time, my demand was so high it inspired me to create my own team of textured hair specialists. In 2022, I opened up my very own salon space, and it has been a dream! Nothing great comes easy, but I definitely feel like I am moving in my purpose. Read more>>

At 26, I launched Dekree Studio as a one-woman branding agency in Pittsburgh, PA. It started small but with big ambition. Within a few years, we had earned a name for ourselves in the Washington DC and DMV area, becoming the go-to agency for restaurants and hospitality brands looking to stand out through bold, thoughtful design. Read more>>

In August of 2020 I got the call that my little brother had passed away and it seemed like my whole world had stopped. Bobby was not only my little brother but he was also special needs. Unbeknownst to us at the time but the farm was having an effect on him mentally that no medication could ever do. Some days he would come over not to hang out with me but just to get some animal therapy. Bobby absolutely loved coming to the farm even if it was just to help out with some meaningless task. Jungle Jim’s Farm was created because of how much it helped him out and we know that this farm which he loved so much will help out so many people. Read more>>

It also took time to build a community that appreciated both the aesthetics and the intention behind the brand. But the more I leaned into my culture, my identity, and my vision, the more things started to click. Now, seeing people wear these pieces, attend workshops, and feel seen—that makes all the struggles worth it. Read more>>

It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I first discovered my love for photography back in high school, around my sophomore year. Like most students, I was focused on academics and didn’t have a steady income. Photography, as fulfilling as it is, can be an expensive passion to pursue. But that didn’t stop me. I hustled to find jobs—any way I could earn enough to invest in my own gear. I’ve always been someone who believes in working hard for what I want, and earning everything on my own has always been a source of pride. Read more>>

I have been a doula here in Houston since 2003. I became interested in Doula work after the birth of my second child. My first baby was born during Tropical Storm Allison in the Texas Medical Center and she unfortunately died 12 weeks later. We found out shortly after we had been evacuated from the hospital that she had multiple congential heart defects and although we tried our very best to help her, in late August she died. Deep in my grief, I knew I wanted to try again. We were fearful and we went through a lot of testing to make sure I could conceive and carry a healthy pregnancy. Read more>>

I’m originally from Selma, Alabama—a place rich in history, culture, and resistance. Growing up there taught me the power of storytelling, especially the kind that speaks truth and moves people. I was drawn to movement and expression at a young age, and dance quickly became my first language. Choreography was where I first found my voice—telling stories through the body when words weren’t enough. Read more>>

Editing videos shot on an iPhone 6 and learning from online tutorials, I discovered a growing talent that felt both natural and fulfilling. As I gained confidence, a significant turning point arrived in the fall of 2019 when I created a hype video for my football team. After sustaining a shoulder injury that kept me off the field for a few games, I channeled my energy into crafting this video. The response was overwhelming; it gained local virality, catalyzing a surge in my work editing hype and highlight videos for various sports across the Houston area. Read more>>

He said “nah” I was like we should jam together and he was a hit hesitant but then he agreed, and then he said “look there’s a guitar center down the street, let’s go there after work and I’ll show you what I can do” so we went down there and while shy at first he started ripping on the drums. I knew then and there he was gonna be special. Next we went on to have our first practice on Sunday and that was the birth of Los Kalaveras, I may have come up with the concept sure but we were never Los Kalaveras without my brothers. From there we practiced and practiced till we got our first show with the help of a band we met at a local show called Blizz and it was history ever since. Read more>>

I grew up in a family where food was always at the center of everything. Both of my grandmothers loved to cook, each with her own style. One of them had a more elaborate, planned-out approach, while the other cooked in a very traditional, intuitive way — she rarely measured, just cooked “al tanteo,” as we say in Mexico. Watching them taught me that food is a powerful way to care for people and bring them together. Read more>>

I was able to cash out my IRA account and cover the cost of the childcare center. I officially got licensed for the center with the state of Texas in September 2019. My now Senior Director was working at the center as the Director when I took over and we basically hit the ground running. We repainted, decorated, and rebranded the childcare center and quickly changed became one of the more popular childcare centers in Conroe. In May of 2021, I opened my second location in Willis, Tx and since the original location in Conroe had had a waiting list for several months, I decided to take a leap of faith and apply for a loan with the SBA to build my own building instead of resigning a lease for the original building. My new building opened in August 2024 and is about 75% full with a capacity of 207 children. Read more>>

In the Sunnyside community, we built a community garden and a chess park to promote strategic thinking and sustainability. Read more>>

Well my youtube journey started when I reconnected with my good friend Warren Henry around 2015. We’ve been friends since middle school, but we lost touch with each other due to separate life paths. One day I was added to a group chat with him in there and was told to pull up to his apartment. I decided I would go and that turned out to be on of the best decisions of my life. From there we started a youtube channel called IntheclutchEnt in 2017 and started recording reaction videos. Little by little the views were starting to pile up and we started to get a fan base. Fast forward 8 years later and now we are at over 950,000 subscribers and still growing the channel every day. Read more>>

From a young age I enjoyed drawing and crafting. Any where I would grab a pen and a napkin and would draw whatever was in front of me. Born and raised in Mexico …My love for painting started at 14 when I was able to take classes in Mexico City for a few months and learned to use Pastels. Passionate about the arts / plastic and performing arts we moved to the city of Queretaro where I did theatre and continued creating backdrops and costumes. By 18 I decided to join the Beauty Arts Institute for the Visual Arts Bachelor Program, where grew more my interest in Plastic Arts. Followed by a transfer to Houston where I was able to acquire an Interior Design Associate where I combined my love for Art and creating. Read more>>

25 years ago at the age of 15 I was gifted my first set of Dj Turntables and mixer by my brother Rolando. I kept bugging my parents to buy them but they were not financially stable at the time. So one day on either my birthday or birthday week, I cant exactly remember but he took me to Guitar Center and purchased a Dj bundle of Turntables and a Mixer. As soon as we got home I remember he put me to the test and said “Let’s see what you got” I immediately tried my best but must admit, I had no clue what I was doing. He said” I didn’t buy these for nothing” Ever since that day I practiced and practiced until I got it right. Read more>>

As a daughter of a dyslexic mother and a sister of two dyslexic brothers, I have been an advocate for individuals with dyslexia from a young age, tutoring my 18 year old brother whose emotional and academic intelligence was failed by the the whole language philosophy of the Los Angeles County School System where his teachers literally gave him a magazine and told him to sit in a corner while they taught his nondyslexic, nonADHD classmates to read.  Read more>>

I wouldn’t say it’s been the smoothest, but I know that because of my training and my relationship with God that everything will turn out the way it’s supposed to. Along with growing pains, I have realized that I had to face the fact that my mom was right about the industry being as what she would say “a doggy dog world.” With being a woman in a male-dominated industry, I’ve realized it can be a few weirdos who will pretend to want to collab when they actually have ulterior motives. Read more>>

Our dream was to operate from a storefront. In 2022, our dream became a reality. We provide excellent customer service and we love putting smiles on our customers faces when they taste the product. We knew early on that we didn’t just want to sell coffee—we wanted to create an experience that felt intentional, welcoming, and rooted in quality. We started small with a coffee cart and catered at weddings, baby showers, wedding showers, employee appreciations, etc., and have moved our way up to a trailer. Our coffee trailer is parked in the heart of the city we live in. We are currently working on expanding our business to open a brick and mortar in our community. We were able to grow thanks to many doors that opened for us. It’s wild to think about our journey. There were many times that it didn’t make sense – the only thing I knew is that this was all a God thing. Read more>>

My advice is to network but also read the room and use discernment. Trust your gut feelings. If you’re in school, get on your professor’s good side. Have people critique your resume. Have knowledge about the people you are interviewing. Post your content! I’m trying not to sound cliche but this stuff is true. Reach out to people who’s shoes you want to be in. Do not be easily discourage. Read more>>

As a child, however, I was innately in tune with my inner world. I remember being deeply aware of my thoughts and feelings, yet also painfully self-conscious about them. A vivid memory I carry is sitting in the nurse’s office at school, mesmerized by an emotions chart on the wall. It was astounding to realize how many emotions one person could feel and equally astounding how none of them ever seemed welcome at home. Read more>>

Throughout everything, I held tightly to the words of my great-grandmother: “Trust in God, put Him first, and work hard to become someone in life.” She has always been my motivation, and I’ve carried her advice with me every step of the way. Despite the challenges, I remained focused on my education, consistently earning honor roll status and graduating in the top 3 of my high school class. Some of the struggles starting out early, it was just hard to get opportunities without having a portfolio and getting people to trust you. My Husband picked up the slack, putting in even more hours at his corporate job (not to mention volunteering countless hours to my new venture), and allowed me to give my dream a real chance. I didn’t even know what type of business I would pursue, but I was determined to make it happen. I love gemstones and wanted to do something metaphysical and healing through the Earth, but quickly realized how saturated the market was. I decided to keep my options open, so I created a shop that allows me to be creative and see what happens. I love upcycling and repurposing, so I decided to create items out of reclaimed materials, while still offering gemstones and other items that I love. Read more>>

The best thing about my business is, I have yet to even reach my full potential. The first year in business I remember making $2300 that year. Now in year seven I’m making over $70,000. What started as a general curiosity about human behavior quickly became a deep fascination with the brain, our emotions, and the invisible threads that connect us all. Each lecture felt less like a class and more like a calling. I can’t explain it exactly, but I knew in my gut that I was right where I was meant to be. By the end of the semester, I had changed my major, enrolled in every psychology class I could, and began reading self-help books in my free time. I didn’t know it then, but I was already taking the first steps toward becoming a therapist. Read more>>

Smooth roads are to be found if you want to reach a finish line. I’ve had many rocky moments that helped me reinforce my “vehicle”. Although, a quiet soul with a loud goal is THE struggle for me. Thanks to social media though, I’ve refined that. “Content creating” helped me break out of a shell that otherwise was too timid, but being shy is not rapper material, ya know? That cocky persona is an emotion not a way of life. Read more>>

Through the end of the year, Solis Mammography – the nation’s largest independent provider of breast screening services – presents its “Help Us Help Houston” campaign through its seven locations across the greater Houston region. From now through the end of the year, patients who schedule and complete their annual screening mammogram at Solis Mammography, will also give the gift of restoration and recovery.

For every mammogram appointment scheduled and completed at any Solis Mammography center in the Houston area between Oct. 23 and Dec. 31, $10 will be donated to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund by Solis Mammography and its partners in the effort, HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division and Hologic. To signal their participation in the campaign, all patients need to do is use the code “Harvey” when they check-in for their appointment.

The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund was established by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. The fund is administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation. Because of the immense need in and around Houston, this fund is dedicated to relieving gaps that are not met by other local and federal efforts for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
