Every neighborhood in Houston has its own vibe, style, culture and history, but what consistently amazes us is not what differentiates the various neighborhoods but rather what they all have in common.  From the Fourth Ward to Sugar Land (and everywhere in between) we’ve been blown away by how many creative and talented people call Houston home.  Check out some of the inspiring stories we’ve discovered throughout the city.

Because of her, I developed a passion for crafting, knowing that every challenge is an opportunity to grow. I started small, learning as much as I could, and over time, I built the confidence and skills needed to reach where I am today. There was a time I thought I might not even make it to graduation. I lost contact with my school and believed I would have to start all over again—repay tuition, redo my hours, and basically begin from scratch. On top of that, COVID had just hit, and like many others, I felt lost and unsure. I started to lose passion and really questioned if I should keep going. It felt like everything I had worked for might slip away. Read more>>

It all started during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many people, I found myself stuck at home with a lot of extra time on my hands. I had always enjoyed making content, but I never really took it seriously. The lockdowns gave me the chance to dive in and experiment with different styles. I created my TikTok account as a fun way to keep me busy, but soon I found myself getting hooked. I loved the creativity and the freedom the platform offered. Read more>>

It took a lot of confidence to put my art into the public being known as “Poofiart” by joining local galleries and markets in 2023 without having a professional artistic background or person to guide me. My journey of being a local artist continues to be my most liberating step forward in life as I am now making personal connections through my art, collaborating with other amazing artists, exploring different mediums, and expanding my presence from my vendor table into studios and stores. Read more>>

This two-year journey hasn’t been the easiest. Without an agency or manager, I’ve been doing this thing on my own. Driving to casting calls, updating my comp card, applying for shoots/shows, etc. I believe the people who support me and my love for fashion are what have kept me going despite having to get myself out there pretty much alone. On top of that, all my work is voluntary (for now). I have never been compensated for any of my work. Sometimes, working as long as I do for some shoots and shows, but not getting paid, can be discouraging. And then there was the comparing and wishing I was working with the people or getting the deals other models got that I’m mutual friends with. Eventually, I learned that my time is coming and that I just have to leave it up to God to guide me and be patient. Read more>>

Wildflower Winds

Every moment of Wildflower Winds has been a joy — we share a lifelong love of music and flute performance. One of the ongoing challenges, and also one of the most exciting parts, is adapting our music to fit each audience’s unique taste. As musical preferences continue to evolve, it pushes us to stay creative, explore new repertoire, and keep things fresh. Also, low flute (alto and bass flute) repertoire isn’t as widely available as C flute repertoire, so there have been times we needed to get creative and arrange pieces to adapt to our trio! Read more>>

Like Suidward from SpongeBob would say “It all started, when I was born”. Honestly it would be no other way to say my why. My mother suffered with sickecell, and was poisoned due to afterbirth complications with my older sibling, so I had to be cut out of her on December 10th, one day before her birthday, she passed on Christmas just fifteen days after in the hospital. I carried a lot of feelings due to the void of not having that part of my broughtupsy, and my father worked very hard to prove for myself and my elder sibling.  Read more>>

I immigrated from El Salvador and worked short end jobs to provide for my family. Faced with hardships, I applied at a dealership for an auto parts position. One day, I noticed a transmission that was propelled above the mechanic’s head. It was straddling and before it could fall on him, I ran to help. The mechanic was so grateful he offered to teach me on the side. With his guidance, I was able to become a master technician and now have over 30 years of experience in this industry. Read more>>

One day, I discovered that my dad used to rap when a video of his popped up on YouTube. I had no idea! I was amazed and wanted to learn more. I asked my dad to teach me how to rap, but he didn’t take me serious at first. Eventually, he let me record a song in the studio, and I did it in one take. My uncle gave me the nickname ONE TAKE K, and that motivated me to keep improving. That’s when Classic Kiki was born. Read more>>

There were moments of doubt, times when I felt overlooked, unsupported, or misunderstood. But I kept going. I turned criticism into motivation and made a choice to embrace my inner ‘baddie’—the unapologetic, confident, purpose-driven version of myself. I realized I was an acquired taste, and that was okay. I stopped people-pleasing and started walking in my truth, attracting the people and opportunities aligned with my purpose. Read more>>

I decided I wanted to pursue an operatic performance career, and so when I went back to school that fall, I started auditioning for every professional company I possibly could have. Though I didn’t land any gigs that year, I did the following year. And from the summer of 2018 until the summer of 2022, I was consistently working in young artist programs. Since then, I’ve moved into principal artists roles at regional houses (including several appearances at Opera in the Heights here in Houston!), and I continue to work to hone my craft. Read more>>

It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Being a fashion designer is equal parts passion and perseverance. In the beginning, one of the biggest struggles was getting people to take me seriously—especially when you’re just starting out, without a big name or a massive portfolio. There’s a lot of rejection, and you have to learn not to take it personally. Read more>>

Definitely not always smooth. Juggling multiple careers, being a mom of three, and opening a business during some pretty uncertain times meant there were definitely moments of doubt and exhaustion. Growing up as the only boy surrounded by women, I witnessed firsthand the magic of hairstyling—like straight hair turned curly with the help of a microwave. I would practice styling hair during recess and in my spare time, often convincing my girl cousins to play “hair salon,” where I was, of course, the stylist. One day, my aunt said, “You’d make a great hairstylist.” That encouragement lit a spark in me, and I began to refine my skills. Read more>>

My journey into photography—and specifically boudoir—started from a deeply personal place. As a mom and a woman who spent years navigating body image struggles, I know what it feels like to look in the mirror and not fully recognize or celebrate the woman staring back. Photography began as a creative outlet, but it quickly became a calling when I realized I could help other women reclaim their confidence the same way I was learning to reclaim mine. Read more>>

My story is built on Faith and rooted in service. For over two decades, I’ve been committed to helping families, educators, and communities build, protect, and preserve their legacies. I started in the insurance industry back in 2000, working in auto claims. What I thought would be just a job quickly became a calling. After several years, I took a leap of faith and launched my own independent Allstate agency in 2006— which was the birth of CJCM Enterprises, Inc. I’ve now spent over 24 years in the industry, helping clients navigate everything from personal and commercial insurance to life, health, and annuities. Read more>>

What matters most to me is fulfilling the purpose God placed on my life — and doing it in a way that honors my faith, uplifts my family, and leaves a legacy of impact. I have always been into working out since I was a kid. I grew up a big fan of professional wrestling and was enamored with these giant larger than life characters like The Undertaker and “Macho Man” Randy Savage. So I started weight lifting when I was about 12 years old, my older cousins were into bodybuilding and taught me about strength training and building muscle. After High School I started training people in gyms or out of my garage. I mostly focused on bodybuilding and power lifting programs as that was what I was familiar with. Read more>>

Resilience isn’t something you’re born with—it’s something you build, moment by moment, choice by choice. Leaning into my dreams, even when they felt impossible, or scary, changed everything. It changed how I saw myself, how I carried my past, and how I moved through the world. I proved to myself that the woman I was in the hardest chapter of my life was not a true representation of the woman that I wanted to be. Change is possible. Read more>>

Inspired by **Romans 8:1**—”There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit” (NIV)—her hope is that readers find peace, healing, restoration, faith, and a deeper connection with God (**2 Corinthians 5:7** [NIV]). In high school, I was introduced to an after-school dance program started by my counselor, Jorge Mercado. That program wasn’t just a creative outlet—it became a foundation for my identity. Through dance, I discovered the power of rhythm, movement, and expression. It taught me how music connects people, and that feeling of being in sync with a beat stuck with me. After high school, we didn’t let the program die—we carried it on into the University of Houston, continuing to perform, teach, and inspire others through our shared love for dance. Read more>>

Through the end of the year, Solis Mammography – the nation’s largest independent provider of breast screening services – presents its “Help Us Help Houston” campaign through its seven locations across the greater Houston region. From now through the end of the year, patients who schedule and complete their annual screening mammogram at Solis Mammography, will also give the gift of restoration and recovery.

For every mammogram appointment scheduled and completed at any Solis Mammography center in the Houston area between Oct. 23 and Dec. 31, $10 will be donated to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund by Solis Mammography and its partners in the effort, HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division and Hologic. To signal their participation in the campaign, all patients need to do is use the code “Harvey” when they check-in for their appointment.

The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund was established by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. The fund is administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation. Because of the immense need in and around Houston, this fund is dedicated to relieving gaps that are not met by other local and federal efforts for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
