Hidden Gems: Local Businesses & Creatives You Should Know

Every day we have a choice. We can support an up and coming podcaster, try a new family-run restaurant, join a boutique gym started by a local fitness champ or we could keep giving away our money to the handful of giants who already control so much of our commerce. Our daily decisions impact the kind world we live in; if we want a world where small businesses are growing and artists and creatives are thriving then we should support them with our time, money and attention. We’re proud to highlight inspiring creatives and entrepreneurs each week in Hidden Gems series.  Check out some of our latest local gem features below.

A quote that I love by Crystal Sparks that I put on replay during moments of doubt or challenges is “You’ve got to be okay that there’s going to be people that don’t think you’re qualified. You’ve got to be OK that there’s some people that want to see you fail. You’re going to have to be OK that there’s going to be some people that never understand you, that never support you, that never cheer you on & you’re OK to do it without their applause. You’re OK to do it without the approval. I wasn’t doing this for you anyway.” Read More>>

The journey to building my brand, MOVERE, also came with its own set of struggles. When I first tried to trademark the brand name, it was already taken, which was a major setback. However, as fate would have it, the name became available just a month after I was told it wasn’t. That was just one of many obstacles I’ve faced along the way, but I’ve kept moving forward. Today, I can confidently say I’m in a much better position, both personally and professionally, and I’m excited for what’s to come. Read More>>

The further I got into school I was introduced to new mediums, such as clay, where I absolutely fell in love with how versatile and forgiving this medium is. Not only did I learn how to create shapes and vessels with a pottery wheel, but I also learned how to carve and sculpt forms out of huge blocks of clay. I have explored other mediums too, such as limestone, copper wire, and lost-wax bronze casting which all come with their own unique challenges. I find myself wanting to always keep a block of limestone near just in case I feel compelled to hammer and chisel at something! Read More>>

It was Labor Weekend of 2015 that our founding board of directors decided that their current running community was no longer serving their running goals. In the following months they gathered like minded runners and discussed what they wanted and needed from a running club. Our club has continued to grow and expand since then and now has just under 500 members who love to run and serve their community. Read More>>

After Olivia was born, she started to have some gastrointestinal issues. The GI issues were affecting Olivia’s ability to sleep and be pain free, as well as affecting my mental and emotional stress levels too. It got so bad that we ended up seeking medical attention and our pediatrician told me that there was a possibility that Olivia was allergic to something that I was eating and then receiving that allergen through my breast milk. I found out that one of the most common allergens for infants is dairy. So I took dairy out of my diet to see if Olivia’s condition improved. Read More>>

However, as much as I love calling Hawai’i home, being surrounded by miles of Pacific Ocean tends to cause one to think to themselves, “what else is out there?” Thus, my adventurous soul would often fly out of the islands in order to explore the world beyond the waters. I have been blessed to visit many countries and other states in the mainland (Continental U.S.) through the grace of God, the gift of long distance friendships, and the pure will to see what I have never seen before. Each visit outside of Hawai’i only expanded my worldview, my knowledge, and my appreciation of where I came from. Read More>>

This sale I went to back in 2018 is called Just Between Friends (JBF), and though I didn’t know it at the time, it is a national company of franchisees, with over 150 sale locations across the country.
