Every neighborhood in Houston has its own vibe, style, culture and history, but what consistently amazes us is not what differentiates the various neighborhoods but rather what they all have in common. From the Fourth Ward to Sugar Land (and everywhere in between) we’ve been blown away by how many creative and talented people call Houston home. Check out some of the inspiring stories we’ve discovered throughout the city.

I ended up doing one semester at nursing school before I realized my true passion was doing nails. So around this time (2020) COVID-19 hit. The time that we spent in quarantine I reconnected with doing nails and put all of my time back into practicing the craft. Not too long after that I applied to cosmetology school, completed my 3 months and graduated with my manicurist license. I started working at a salon my dad owned and it felt so surreal to actually be in my own space doing what I loved. Here I am almost 5 years later in a new city still having the time of my life doing what I love…nails. Read More>>

Right before heading off to college, I met a girl I was waitressing with who was attending Paul Mitchell Hair School. I had no idea there was an actual school for hair—it felt like fate. I’m a visual learner, and working with my hands just clicked. Hair school was everything I hoped for, and I got to experience it with my best friend, who’s now a successful makeup artist. Read More>>

I began pursuing photography full-time right after earning my bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston in 2017. Since then, photography has taken me down many different avenues in life. I not only run my portrait company, Photography by Amy Cole, but I also own a sister company, Amy Cole Creative, LLC, which focuses on marketing assets for businesses and professionals. Through this, I use photography to curate digital marketing assets such as headshots, social media content, and branding images. One of the biggest companies I work with is a wholesale diamond jewelry company in NYC, which means I travel quite a bit for that as well so my photography as taken me all over the USA. Read More>>

Half way through high school we moved to Texas where I finished high school, and spent time working and going to Community College. I found it challenging to pay for school and work as much as possible, so before I finished my second year of College I enlisted in the United States Air Force. I enlisted in May of 2010 and spent time at Basic Training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. For me it was a bus ride over to boot camp, and upon completion I was then transferred to my Technical School at Vandenberg AFB in Lompoc, California. Read More>>

I started getting tattooed when I was about 19. I got really into traditional and started trying to learn how to paint. I met Danny, my mentor, around 2018. I was working in oil and gas at the time. I got tattooed by him for a year or two before I started talking to him about looking for an apprenticeship. I was shocked when he offered to apprentice me. The apprenticeship lasted a year and a half. The first year was just shadowing and painting, no tattooing. The last 6 months I did apprentice tattoos. I graduated my apprenticeship in April 2022 and have been working at Cry Later ever since. Read More>>

Nevertheless, I reached my goals and obtained a bachelors degree in Psychology from Texas Tech and then, in my efforts to explore more away from home, I moved to New Jersey and obtained a Masters degree in Professional Counseling from Seton Hall University. I am incredibly grateful for my time in New Jersey! The way that state handles mental health care is amazing and they are ranked one of the top states in the nation for it! As someone who loves to learn, I wanted exposure to mental healthcare in as many settings as possible! I did case management, children’s mobile response for crisis stabilization, therapeutic nursery, psychiatric inpatient care, as well as school and community based counseling. I gained experience working with just about all ages, demographics, and diagnoses. Read More>>

Cooking runs in my blood. I grew up watching my mom and grandmother work their magic in the kitchen, and it always felt natural to me. My first-ever paid catering order was no small task—eight briskets at once! From there, everything grew through word of mouth. After college, I started doing festivals, and people kept requesting different dishes. I took on the challenge, kept experimenting, and every dish became a hit. Read More>>

One of the biggest struggles was finding creators who were actively seeking management and guidance. It took a lot of effort to connect with the right people and build relationships. I chose a career in social work because my heart and passion has always been in serving people. I have loved it. Talking to other agents, they tell you they are always learning. You have to be open minded and not be afraid to tell a client (if something is new or you have not faced the same challenges for a while) – that you will get counsel before advising them the right course of action. Classes teach you the basics of RE but nothing beats working in the field. Each situation is different and all deals have their own nuances. You have to be nimble. I always build close relationships with colleagues, so I can ask the prevalent questions and expand my knowledge, while offering the best counsel and advise to my clients. Read More>>

One can say for the most part, it has been really smooth. Like any business, it comes with struggles in the beginning but like they say, all good things take time. Being a new business in the Houston Heights area and trying to get our name out there, as well as adapting to the neighborhood took some time, but after a while it all fell into place. Would love to know how to be in contact with you. We have a great story to tell.
Through the end of the year, Solis Mammography – the nation’s largest independent provider of breast screening services – presents its “Help Us Help Houston” campaign through its seven locations across the greater Houston region. From now through the end of the year, patients who schedule and complete their annual screening mammogram at Solis Mammography, will also give the gift of restoration and recovery.
For every mammogram appointment scheduled and completed at any Solis Mammography center in the Houston area between Oct. 23 and Dec. 31, $10 will be donated to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund by Solis Mammography and its partners in the effort, HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division and Hologic. To signal their participation in the campaign, all patients need to do is use the code “Harvey” when they check-in for their appointment.
The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund was established by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. The fund is administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation. Because of the immense need in and around Houston, this fund is dedicated to relieving gaps that are not met by other local and federal efforts for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
