Portraits of Houston

It’s more important to understand someone than to judge them. We think the first step to understanding someone is asking them the fundamental questions about who they are and how they became the person they are today. Understanding and empathy are essential building blocks for a better, more compassionate world. We’re incredibly fortunate to be able to ask these questions each week through our interview series. Below you’ll find inspiring interviews from in and around Houston.

With a background in business and a natural ability to analyze and solve problems, I wanted a career that combined my skills with my desire to make a meaningful impact. Real estate became that perfect fit. Helping individuals—like the Alvarado-Guzman family, who recently bought their first home in the U.S.—reminds me why I do what I do. There’s something special about guiding people through such a life-changing milestone. Read more>>

After closing my wedding planning business in 2019 (ironically right before the pandemic) I started making over our new home with the intention to share it on my blog and Instagram. Little did I know the boredom we would all face in the pandemic would lead to the rise of Tiktok and short form video content. I found myself filming videos instead of taking photos. Editing together 20-30 second clips of room makeovers that were getting millions of views on Tiktok while the blog post I spent 5+ hours writing and putting together was lucky to get 5k views. I knew I wanted to be a blogger and content creator, but I didn’t realize just how different that job would come to look in the next five years. Read more>>

With the encouragement of my amazing husband, I decided to turn my passion into something tangible. I took a small leap of faith and bought a candle-making kit from Amazon for about $60. My first batch consisted of just two candles—one I took to my parents’ house, and the other I gifted to my friend Hira. The response was incredible! My second batch was three jars of succulent candles, and it was my younger sister, Zobia, who encouraged me to post them on social media. I was blown away by the love and support I received from friends and family. That same week, I decided to take a bigger step and participated in my first pop-up event with my sister-in-law, Kiran. Read more>>

Running a small company and transitioning to a growing business isn’t without its struggles! Growing pains are real, and they hit hard. The rising costs of raw materials, along with the extra details we love to add to our products, make a big difference. My journey started off on a soccer field at the age of 3 years old. All I wanted to do was play the beautiful game called soccer. My dream as a kid was to represent the Us Virgin Island National Team and become a professional soccer player to make my family proud and help everyone in my family achieve their goals and dreams. As a kid that’s a big dream but in my head it was my passion. I continued to train and play the game, got my first ever national team call up at the age of 14 to represent the US Virgin Islands U15 National Team. Having the honor to represent a country at the age 14 and achieving one of my goals was just amazing and joyful. And that was just the start for me. I went on representing the U17, U20, U23, and now today I represent The Men’s National Team. Read more>>

That passion led me to social media—not just as a platform, but as a tool for connection, influence, and empowerment. I saw firsthand how a strong social media presence could transform a brand, amplify voices, and create real opportunities. However, I also saw many businesses struggling to keep up, missing out on their full potential simply because they didn’t have the time or knowledge to use social media effectively. That’s when I knew I had found my purpose. Read more>>

Born and raised in New York, I’ve always been obsessed with the beauty industry. As a little girl, I would force my cousins and sisters to let me do their hair and makeup, dressing them up and creating looks inspired by the beauty I saw on shows like America’s Next Top Model and magazines. I was captivated by the world of beauty on TV, at salons, and in the pages of fashion magazines. It wasn’t just a hobby—it was a passion that consumed me. I was drawn to the creativity and artistry of makeup, hair, and fashion, and I knew that this world was where I belonged. Read more>>

Coming from my role at NOV, I had a global platform and a network of industry professionals who could help spread this message. I started introducing the topic in corporate and industry settings, particularly in spaces where trafficking risks are high, like large Internationalevents, transportation and hospitality. I wanted to make this a conversation that didn’t rely on shocking people but moved them to identify themselves as a part of the solution and to do something about it.. One of the biggest challenges I face is financial uncertainty. Photography requires constant investment, from upgrading equipment to funding personal projects. It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. In the beginning, I faced countless rejections from labels, and many people overlooked me. Some organizers didn’t even bother responding to my messages. Now, many of those who once rejected or ignored me have come to respect what I do Read more>>
